Topsoe's technical service portfolio

We offer our clients a wide range of services through individualised service agreements. Topsoe has at its disposal a full range of resources to diagnose the most complex problems, and has extensive experience in the behaviour of catalysts under a wide range of conditions. Combined with our skilled and experienced process, mechanical and instrument engineering departments, this forms the basis for our advisory services and operational assistance.

Analytical support

Making correct feedstock and product analyses is an essential tool in understanding the performance and incorrect analyses may blur understanding or even lead to wrong conclusions. Topsoe also offers to conduct analyses of catalyst samples with regard to level of poisons or activity either as part of our trouble-shooting programme or as a means to evaluate the residual life.

Catalyst selection

During the catalyst lifetime, the client needs to decide whether the catalyst should be replaced with the same type or whether new and more active catalyst types are a better option.

Using sophisticated computer programmes, Topsoe is able to calculate the effect of replacing the catalyst. Calculations will illustrate future behaviour of the existing catalyst charge compared to a new charge or an entirely new catalyst, assisting our clients in selecting the optimal replacement catalyst.

Service contracts

On request we offer our technology clients a service contract which is based on individual clients needs. A service contract may include:

  • regular visits
  • performance optimisation
  • evaluation of procedures
  • regular training

Catalyst lifetime prediction

Very often, units are operated with feedstocks and at conditions which differ from the design basis, and this can lead to changes in expected lifetime. Unplanned catalyst replacements can be very costly, and with careful planning of the replacement of catalyst and components clients may reduce down-time considerably. Topsoe participates in replacement planning through catalyst lifetime predictions.

Loading, activation and commissioning of catalysts

Loading of catalytic reactors such as steam reformers and synthesis converters often requires adherence to specific procedures in order to achieve a uniform flow distribution and thus the best possible performance of the unit. Also certain catalysts such as hydrotreating catalysts and shift catalysts need careful attention in order to obtain the highest possible activity. Topsoe's experienced technical service engineers are available for supervision of such critical operations on site.

Mechanical and instrument services

As designers of technological systems we have extensive in-house mechanical and instrumental expertise. Our expertise focuses on our proprietary equipment but we also have extensive experience with more general equipment such as separators, heat exchangers, reactors, piping, valves etc. The service we offer is tailored to meet specific client needs.

Metallurgical challenges

Many unplanned stoppages of chemical plants have their root in various corrosion phenomena. Understanding these corrosion phenomena is essential in order to avoid repeats. For most of our processes, the materials set the limit for process performance. To meet and understand these challenges Topsoe has a strong metallurgical group. Our services focus mainly on our technology clients, and we can assist in examinations of corroded components as well as fact findings in relation to stops originating from metallurgical issues.

Performance evaluation and optimisation

Operating a plant at the optimum conditions ensures the best performance. Topsoe offers to conduct performance evaluations to ensure that the technology and/or catalyst are operating at the best possible conditions.

Training

Our knowledge of catalysts and process design generates knowledge about how to operate our technology. We offer tailor-made courses meeting our clients’ needs focusing on our core competencies – catalyst systems and proprietary equipment.

Trouble-shooting

Clients may experience operating conditions or upsets which do not result in optimum performance. Topsoe offers clients broad in-house knowledge and expertise to analyse the cause of the upset or the effects of changed operating conditions. 

With Topsoe's TopGun analysis system a skilled engineer can assess the state of health of a sulphuric acid plant in the course of a few days using proprietary portable equipment.

Turn-around assistance

A successful turn-around requires careful planning. In the planning phase we can provide you with recommendations on what elements should be inspected and/or replaced. We are also happy to supervise inspections and replacements on site.
