For over half a century Topsoe has enjoyed close collaboration with the Russian industry and the scientific society initiated by Dr. Haldor Topsøe. The considerable and fruitful scientific collaboration between the Russian scientific and design institutes and Topsoe's R&D center in Denmark is still active.

To strengthen the technical and commercial collaboration with the industry, Topsoe has been represented in Russia since 1991 through the Moscow Representative Office. The main goal of the office is liaison with and assist the headquarters in Denmark in marketing Topsoe technologies and catalysts and in coordinating the technical service rendered to our clients in Russia and in the other countries of the former Soviet Union. Another important task is to maintain and broaden the scientific collaboration and company contacts with industry and pertinent authorities and ministries. At the Moscow Representative Office, the company activities are grouped as follows:

  • Fertilizer and petrochemical technologies:

    For the production of ammonia, methanol, formaldehyde and hydrogen based on various feedstocks as well as for the revamp of existing plants. About half of the revamped ammonia converters in operation today in the countries of former Soviet Union have been revamped using Topsoe technology.

  • Environmental protection technologies:

    Topsoe gas cleaning technologies WSA, DeNOx and CATOX/REGENOX for removal of sulphur, NOx, solvents and other organic components from refineries, metallurgical, power and other industrial plant off-gases. WSA, DENOX and CATOX units have been cleaning off gases from various industrial plants in the FSU countries for about 15 years.

  • Refinery technologies:

    Topsoe technologies for hydrocracking and hydrotreating all crude oil fractions ranging from light naphtha to resid. Deep HDS of diesel, feed pretreatment and HDA as well as technologies for distributor trays are all in our portfolio. Our established technologies for hydrogen plants (both skid-mounted HTCR and conventional large-scale) are also included. Topsoe technologies have been and are being successfully implemented at refineries in Russia as well as in other countries of FSU. 

  • Catalysts:

    Topsoe catalysts for the production of ammonia, methanol, hydrogen, sulphuric acid and formaldehyde as well as catalysts for the refinery sector and selected specialty catalysts. At present Topsoe catalysts are installed in more than 70% of all operational ammonia plants in the FSU countries. Several of the largest sulphuric acid plants and refineries also operate with Topsoe catalysts.

  • Scientific collaboration:

    To coordinate the long-term programs for joint research with the Russian institutes and to manage the "Topsoe Ph.D. Grant". In 1995 Dr. Topsoe created this program to support young talented scientists in Russia in the form of personal grants awarded by a competition to selected Ph.D. students for an original investigation project in catalysis and surface science. About 80 Ph.D.-students from different Russian cities have received the scholarships in the period of 1996-2008.
