Topsoe Fuel Cell announced today that it has been selected to develop a high power density solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stack concept and to deliver 2 SOFC stacks for a 1.5 – 2.5 kW power unit for a US government (US Air Force Research Lab) supported project led by United Technologies Research Center (UTRC), a unit of United Technologies Corporation (NYSE: UTX). The power unit is intended for various military applications and the project aims to establish a brass board test unit by 2007 – 08 to prove the concept. The advantage of using SOFC in this configuration is the promising potential in terms of high power density, the high fuel flexibility of the SOFC technology and the low signature (low emission of noise, heat etc.).

“We are very pleased to have been selected as a subcontractor to UTC, which is one of the major players within fuel cell technology”, says Helge Holm-Larsen, Director, Business Development. “These activities represent our most important collaboration within SOFC technology in North America and we appreciate the recognition involved as a supplier to a US government sponsored fuel cell program,” he adds. He expects that successful demonstration of solid oxide fuel cells in these applications will lead to additional activity with the US government in the years to come.

Topsoe Fuel Cell believes that solid oxide fuel cell technology is the most efficient fuel cell technology.
