Topsoe receives order for large-scale ammonia plant in Algeria
13-05-2008
A contract for the supply of Topsoe process technology and catalysts for two ammonia plants has been signed with the Algeria Oman Fertilizer Company. “We see this as an important milestone for the coming increased requirement for fertilizers worldwide,” says Jørgen Gøl, Director of Marketing and Sales in the Technology Division.
Joint venture
The Algeria Oman Fertilizer Company (El Djazairia El Omania Lil Asmida SPA) is a joint venture between the Suhail Bahwan Group Holding LLC of Oman and Sonatrach, an Algerian government-owned company formed to exploit the country's hydrocarbon resources - and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI).
“We are pleased that MHI and Topsoe have won the contract for the ammonia plants and look forward to cooperating with the Algeria Oman Fertilizer Company,” says Jørgen Gøl, Director of Marketing and Sales in the Technology Division.
Two ammonia production plants
The fertiliser production complex will be built in the Arzew industrial zone near Oran, the second largest city in Algeria, on the Mediterranean coast. The complex will consist of two 2,000 MTPD (metric tons per day) ammonia production plants, two 3,500 MTPD urea production and granulation plants and supporting facilities. The main part of the ammonia will be converted into urea.
A contribution to Algeria's economic development
Algeria is the world's fourth-largest producer of natural gas and also produces high-quality light crude oil. In recent years, Algeria has been promoting the production of high-value-added products from these resources to foster its own industries. As demand for fertilizer is expected to continue expanding steadily due to rising food production in response to global population growth, the new complex is expected to contribute substantially to Algeria's economic development.
