Formation of a whisker-type carbon nanofiber. The diameter of the Ni nanocrystal is about 10 nm.

Growth of nanofibres

By monitoring the process of catalytic growth of carbon nanofibres and whiskers in situ we obtained insight in how a nickel nanocluster catalyst was exposed to a gas mixture of methane and hydrogen at elevated temperatures.

The film clips reveal insight into the surface dynamic processes and demonstrate through interplay with DFT that mono-atomic step sites act as the catalytic active growth centers for the graphene layers.
