PK-5 is Topsoe’s methanation catalyst for conversion of carbon oxides to methane.
PK-5 is used for conversion of carbon oxides to methane in ammonia plants. PK-5 is unreduced and is typically installed on top of the prereduced PK-7R.
High thermal stability and low pressure drop
PK-5 is part of the Topsoe PK series of methanation catalysts. PK-5 has a very high thermal stability and can operate at temperatures as high as 430°C (810°F). With its ring shape, the PK-5 catalyst achieves a 50% reduction in pressure drop relative to the conventional spherical or cylindrical shaped methanation catalysts. An additional advantage of the ring shape is a higher catalyst activity due to the higher ratio of external surface to volume.
