Master Thesis in Reliability & Maintenance Planning at Topsoe

    Location Frederikssund, Denmark
    Job Category Interns
    Deadline May 26, 2026

    Role and impact:

Are you a Master’s student who wants to work on real industrial challenges with direct business impact?

At Topsoe, we are looking for Master’s thesis students to join our Reliability and Maintenance Planning area and contribute to projects that improve asset reliability, maintenance performance, and operational stability in our production environment.

We offer thesis opportunities for students with different academic backgrounds, including Data & AI, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and related technical disciplines.

    Available thesis topics:

    1. AI-based analysis of drone inspection videos for tank deterioration assessment

Relevant background: Data Science, AI, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, Software Engineering, or similar.

In this project, you will explore how AI can support the analysis of drone videos from tank inspections to assess deterioration development year on year. The purpose is to investigate whether a data-driven solution can improve consistency, speed, and quality in inspection follow-up and support maintenance decision-making.

    Possible focus areas:

    • Structuring and preparing inspection video data
    • Applying computer vision/AI methods to identify visible deterioration patterns
    • Comparing deterioration across inspection periods
    • Building a proof-of-concept tool or methodology
    • Evaluating the practical value and limitations of such a solution

    2. Evaluation of lye cleansing potential in alumina production

Relevant background: Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Production Engineering, or similar.

In this project, you will evaluate the potential of lye cleansing in Topsoe’s alumina production process and assess the expected operational benefits.

A key objective is to understand whether this approach can help reduce the need for quarterly shutdown activities and improve process stability and maintainability.

    Possible focus areas:

    • Mapping the current production and cleaning challenges
    • Evaluating technical feasibility of lye cleansing
    • Assessing impact on fouling, performance, and shutdown requirements
    • Estimating operational and maintenance benefits
    • Supporting a recommendation for future implementation

    3. Standardization analysis of transport conveyors and implementation planning

Relevant background: Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Production Engineering, or similar.

In this project, you will help drive a standardization analysis of transport conveyors used in production and develop an implementation plan.

The objective is to reduce complexity, improve maintainability, support spare parts management, and create a more robust setup for future maintenance and operations.

    Possible focus areas:

    • Mapping current conveyor types, configurations, and critical components
    • Identifying standardization opportunities
    • Evaluating technical and operational consequences
    • Supporting cost-benefit analysis
    • Developing a practical implementation roadmap

    4. Development of condition-based / predictive maintenance through data integration between Sattline and SAP PM

Relevant background: Mechanical Engineering, Automation, Data Engineering, Industrial IT, Reliability Engineering, or similar.

In this project, you will support the development of a condition-based / predictive maintenance process by investigating how operational data from the Sattline system can be linked more directly to SAP PM.

The goal is to improve the use of equipment condition and operational data in maintenance planning and decision-making.

    Possible focus areas:

    • Mapping available operational and maintenance data sources
    • Identifying relevant condition indicators and triggers
    • Evaluating integration opportunities between Sattline and SAP PM
    • Supporting the design of a predictive or condition-based maintenance workflow
    • Recommending a scalable implementation approach

    What you will bring:
We are seeking students currently enrolled in a relevant Master’s programme, such as Data Science, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Automation, Data Engineering, or related technical disciplines.

You should have a strong analytical and structured approach, be motivated by solving real technical and operational problems, and demonstrate the ability to work independently while engaging with stakeholders across functions. Good communication skills in Danish are essential, as it is our working language on site.

    Why join us:
Joining Topsoe as a Master’s thesis student means you will work on business-relevant engineering challenges with real impact. You will gain valuable insight into industrial reliability and maintenance practices, collaborate with experienced engineers and specialists, and contribute to projects that shape the future of sustainable production.

We offer a supportive environment where your analysis and recommendations are valued and can be put into practice, providing you with a unique opportunity to develop your skills and make a difference.

    Your new team:
You will become part of a collaborative and professional team, working alongside experienced engineers and specialists who are passionate about innovation and operational excellence. Our team values open communication, shared learning, and practical problem-solving, ensuring you have the support and guidance needed to succeed in your thesis project.

    How you can apply:
Please submit a short motivation letter with your chosen thesis topic, and your CV.
