The world needs marine fuel. But the most popular one we use produces significant quantities of greenhouse gases.

The good news: Alternatives are already here. Our advanced technologies and expertise in emissions management can help the marine industry transition to a more sustainable future.

    Let’s change course together.

    Topsoe and Marine

The pressure is on. Shipping releases roughly 940 million tons of CO₂ into our atmosphere annually, accounting for around 2.5% of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions.¹ The International Maritime Organization aims to reduce this total by at least 20% by 2030 and 70% by 2040.² The challenge for ship owners and operators is to drastically reduce emissions and the amount of sulfur in bunker fuel – while also remaining profitable.

By offering innovative and scalable solutions, in particular alternative fuels such as green methanol, green ammonia, blue ammonia, green hydrogen and blue hydrogen, we can help the marine industry navigate its environmental responsibilities and set a course for long-term success.

    Addressing your needs

Both green methanol and green ammonia have the potential to play a significant role in decarbonizing the shipping industry. They are produced using renewable energy, and due to their high energy densities (the ability to store a lot of energy in a small volume), they can be easily stored and used today with existing infrastructure. Currently, green methanol presents the most viable option in terms of ship engine technology availability. Ammonia engine technology is expected to develop and expand in the near future.

Our breakthrough, renewables-optimized green methanol plant is a winning methanol synthesis solution built on decades of industry leadership. The plants come in four capacity versions and a dynamic loop enables them to keep operating reliably as feedstock loads fluctuate.

Additionally, we are the global leader in ammonia plant technology. Our ammonia loops ensure maximum efficiency and reliability via a straightforward, energy-efficient process. We also supply the catalyst, carefully engineering the symbiosis between converter and catalyst to unleash efficiencies that can’t be had otherwise.

Another fuel source can be taken from the production of low-carbon hydrogen by capturing produced CO₂ and converting hydrocarbon feedstocks with natural gas, as seen with our autothermal reformer technology.
