    US SOEC ELECTROLYZER FACTORY

Topsoe Announces ‘Topsoe Stem Scholarship’ Initiative During Governor Youngkin’s Visit

We plan to award five $10,000 one-year scholarships to high school seniors from Chesterfield County high schools who are planning to pursue a major in a STEM related field. The ‘Topsoe STEM Scholarship’ initiative will be awarded in the spring of 2025 for the 2025-2026 academic year to eligible students.

The announcement was made in conjunction with Governor Glenn Youngkin as part of his visit to Topsoe’s headquarters in Denmark. Governor Youngkin was hosted by Jakob Topsøe, Vice Chairman of the Topsoe Board of Directors and Chairman of Topsoe Holding A/S, Kim Hedegaard, CEO, Power-to-X, Topsoe, and Amy Chiang Chief Sustainability and External Affairs Officer at Topsoe.

Topsoe Announces Plans for New State-of-the-Art US Electrolyzer Factory for Clean Hydrogen

We have announced our plans to build a cutting-edge new factory in Chesterfield, Virginia, that will manufacture advanced, energy efficient Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Cells (SOECs) that are essential in the production of green hydrogen and its derivatives like green ammonia.

Pending final investment decision, the new factory has an expected capacity of more than 1 GW. This more than $400M investment will create at least 150 direct jobs in Virginia and more than 1,000 indirect jobs through the value chain. The project is Topsoe’s largest investment in the US to date and supported up to $136 million in federal Section 48C incentives from the Inflation Reduction Act.

STATE-OF-THE-ART SOLID OXIDE ELECTROLYZER CELL TECHNOLOGY

Driving the decarbonization of the US through proven, highly efficient electrolysis technology that enables industrial-scale production of green hydrogen. When coupled with waste heat from downstream production, Topsoe’s modular, high-temperature SOECs produce up to 30% more hydrogen per total power input compared to conventional electrolyzers.

    INDUSTRIAL-SCALE PRODUCTION OF GREEN HYDROGEN

Green hydrogen is a critical component in decarbonizing energy-intensive industries in the US. Green hydrogen is easily transformed into other derivatives such as eAmmonia and eMethanol that are ideal for decarbonizing energy intensive industries.

US Leadership in Clean Energy Incentives Brings New Investments and Jobs

In April, we announced our plans to build a new state-of-the-art facility in Chesterfield, Virginia, to manufacture advanced, energy-efficient Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Cells (SOEC) - a key component in the world’s most efficient technology for producing clean hydrogen and derivatives like eAmmonia and eMethanol. Topsoe’s SOEC technology is a modular design that leverages high-temperature electrolysis — a tested and proven process that enables industrial-scale production of green hydrogen using renewable electricity. The hydrogen produced can be turned into liquid fuelsand can help decarbonize energy-intensive sectors like heavy-industry and long-distance transportation.

    TOPSOE IN THE US

Over the years, we have supplied a large variety of technologies and solutions to our US customers, and the US will continue to play an important part in Topsoe’s growth. Our presence in the US go back 60 years, as the subsidiary in Houston was established in 1965. Today, we have 200+ dedicated people working in the US across production facilities and our sales organization.

Our catalyst production site in Bayport, Texas produces 16,000 tonnes of catalysts, and in 2023, we opened a new state-of-the art production line to meet future market needs in renewable diesel and SAF.

With our planned Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Cell manufacturing facility in Chesterfield, Virginia we will contribute to the acceleration of US domestic clean energy manufacturing.
