Working towards a more sustainable future

We are committed to making a positive impact on the world. Our purpose, Perfecting chemistry for a better world, guides how we advance the energy transition while building sustainable, long-term business growth. Together, we reduce emissions and address the environmental and social impacts across our operations and value chain.

    Turning sustainability ambition into action

Our sustainability work is directed by our Sustainability Progress Plan (illustrated below). The plan sets a clear direction to deliver on our sustainability ambitions toward 2029 and beyond.

It is built around three focus areas: net zero and circularity, safety and social responsibility and sustainable business conduct. Together, they address environmental, social and governance priorities.

The plan includes nine commitments, supported by concrete, time-bound goals, activities and policies. A clear governance model ensures strong ownership and embeds sustainability across the organization.

    Topsoe sustainability progress plan

    Environmental sustainability

Our work on environmental sustainability is guided by three commitments.

    Environmental policy

    Transition to net zero

With our ambitious commitment to reach net zero by 2040, we have a clear direction for our decarbonization journey. By 2030, we aim to reduce Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions from operations by 95%. For scope 3, our long term goal is a 90% reduction in absolute emissions by 2040. This is supported by a short term goal that 74% of suppliers (by emissions) have GHG targets aligned with SBTi by 2027. To achieve net zero emissions across Scope 1, 2 and 3 by 2040, we combine emissions reductions with permanent carbon removal.

    Advance circularity and cleaner production

Our goal is to advance circularity through a circular economy framework that guides how we improve circular inflows and reduce waste from our operations. We also work closely with value chain partners to increase the recycling of used catalysts. We drive cleaner production through continuous improvements and emission reductions.

    Lead in sustainable solutions

We aim to lead the industry in sustainability documentation. By 2029, we target third-party-reviewed life cycle assessments (LCA) for catalysts representing 80% of catalyst revenue. This helps us deliver more sustainable solutions to our customers and supports the development of our chemical processes.

We want to promote sustainable solutions and a key goal is to have third-party reviewed life cycle assessments (LCA) for catalyst representing 80% of our catalyst revenue by 2030. LCA is a key tool that helps us understand our product hot-spots and improvement potentials. Further, it is used for estimating avoided emissions linked to the use of our energy transition technologies.

    Avoided emissions

Our energy transition technologies enable lower emissions than conventional fossil-based technologies. We report on our customers' expected avoided emissions enabled by our technologies for projects in operation. We calculate avoided emissions at year end using a transparent accounting methodology.

The energy transition technologies in scope include HydroFlex®, eREACT™, SOEC, SynCOR™, WSA and Nshield™. We continue to add solutions as our portfolio of energy transition technologies grows.

    Social sustainability

Our social sustainability commitments center on safety and social responsibility. They are essential to ensuring responsible and sustainable practices across our own operations and throughout our entire value chain.

    Drive Zero Harm excellence

Creating a healthy and safe working environment is fundamental to Topsoe. We call this a Zero Harm culture. Our long-term goal is to reach a total recordable incident frequency rate (TRIFR) in the top quartile of the chemical manufacturing industry by 2029.

Zero Harm reflects our belief that health and wellbeing drive both people and performance. By preventing accidents and strengthening a strong safety culture at every level, we create safer workplaces.

Through proactive actions and continuous improvement, we strive for Health & Safety excellence. We work to ensure that everyone feels safe, valued and empowered to put their health and wellbeing first.

    Promote DE&I and employee engagement

DE&I is about cultivating a culture where every individual feels valued, respected and empowered to contribute to our success. It also has the potential to improve employee engagement while helping to drive innovation and performance.

A key goal is to reach 30% gender balance in management roles by 2026. DE&I is a core part of our social sustainability work. It reflects our global mindset, where we embrace cultural diversity, strengthen collaboration across regions and advance gender balance at all levels of the organization.

We aim to reach an engagement score in the top 10% by 2029. To support this ambition, we have established a robust framework for employee engagement that ensures employee voices are heard and considered in shaping Topsoe’s direction and initiatives.

Support human rights and advance community impact

We are committed to a responsible value chain, with sustainability and ethical practices embedded across our operations and value chain. We believe a strong approach to human rights reduces social and environmental impacts and strengthens the quality and integrity of our products.

Our commitment to local communities is anchored in our Community Impact Program. We allocate 0.1% of annual revenue to support global and local initiatives.
Read more below about our community impact and some of our ongoing partnerships.

    Community impact

Our commitment to community impact builds on our founder’s legacy and a shared belief: strong communities and skilled people benefit society and our business. We believe real progress happens when companies take responsibility for the communities they are part of. That’s why we support education, social development and environmental initiatives. Together, these efforts create opportunities, foster innovation and help address urgent global challenges.

    Our community impact program

Each year, we dedicate 0.1% of the previous year’s revenue to social, environmental and humanitarian initiatives worldwide. Through partnerships and projects aligned with our values, we create lasting positive change for generations to come.

Goal: 95% absolute reduction of GHG emissions from operations by 2030

    Status 2025: On track

Details: This goal supports our commitment to transition to net zero by 2040. By 2025, we had achieved a 48% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions compared to 2020. The reduction was mainly driven by lower N₂O emissions (Scope 1) enabled by installation of our proprietary TertiNOxTM technology.

    Status 2025: Challenging

Details: In 2025, 32% of suppliers had SBTi-aligned targets. We are working with suppliers to increase this share, though achieving the 2027 target remains challenging, as several suppliers are hesitant to commit to similarly ambitious targets. The goal supports our long-term goal to reduce scope 3 emission by 90% absolute by 2040, compared to 2020. The scope includes purchased goods and services, fuel- and energy-related activities and upstream transportation and distribution.
