Off-gas processing | Sour water stripping

Sour water derived from stripping column overhead accumulators and water washing operations contain impurities most notably sulfur compounds and ammonia which must be removed before the water can be reused in the refinery for desalting or is discharged to waste water treatment facilities.

The sour water stripping process uses a gas stream to force both hydrogen sulfide and ammonia out of the solution and into the gas phase. The off-gas from the sour water stripper is sent to a conventional sulfur recovery unit or to a wet gas sulfuric acid unit (WSA) for further treatment.
